At no point does the game justify it both Europolis and Marcuria are empty, lifeless spaces, with nothing to interact with outside of story-specific puzzles. Why Chapters opted for the open-world approach at all is unclear. And when I say wandering, I should probably say traipsing, since you’ll be legging it back and forth across the two pseudo-open-world cities of Europolis and Marcuria for far, far too much of your playtime. Outside of conversations, you’ll be spending most of your time with Chapters wandering around and solving puzzles. With little to distinguish them from countless other fictional clichés, they fail to inspire the emotional attachment Chapters’ story wants you to feel. ![]() And aside from a few exceptions like a wise-cracking crow and a depressed robot, Chapters’ cast is a bland pastiche of generic archetypes, from the stoic warrior with a heart of gold to the mysterious information broker who knows more than she’s letting on. Dialogue tends to drag on for twice as long as it needs to, with characters spelling out their intentions in ways that expose them as mere vessels for exposition. Considering how much time you’ll spend chatting with the inhabitants of Chapters’ world, this is no small problem. ![]() By Chapters’ end, there are so many confusing conspiracies and deus ex machinas that even the inevitable end-game exposition dump can’t bring the tale to a satisfying conclusion.Ī haphazard story could be salvaged by punchy writing or memorable characters, but Chapters has neither. It’s not even explained why Zoë and Kian are so important to the fate of their worlds until many, many hours into the game, and even then, it basically boils down to the cheap ‘chosen one’ trope. For the majority of the game, though, these narratives lack focus, often introducing characters and sub-plots that go nowhere and contribute nothing to the overall plot. As you set out to save the world, the game bounces you back and forth between its two main protagonists, Zoë Castillo and Azadi turncoat Kian Alvane, each of whom has a separate narrative to keep track of. Sadly, even if you can remember every tiny detail of the Dreamfall canon, it won’t make up for Chapters’ scatterbrained story. Even 20 years ago, that would have been recognised as poor puzzle design. Up to this point, Chapters has made no attempt to recap what happened in The Longest Journey, so unless you can clearly recall the plot of a game that released 17 years ago, you’re going to have to resort to trial and error. To move the story forward, you’re tasked with arranging a series of children’s drawings in chronological order according to the events of The Longest Journey, the first Dreamfall game that came out way back in the year 2000. Take a particular mid-game puzzle, for example. Even for someone who played the previous games, it can be overwhelming–11 years is a long time to remember what the heck a Dolmari is, after all. The Azadi, WatiCorp, the revolution of April Ryan– Chapters assumes you’re intimately familiar with the story of the previous two Dreamfall games as it hurls dozens of obscure names and concepts at you without giving you time to catch your breath. From its very first scene, it becomes clear that newcomers to the Dreamfall series will have a tough time following what’s going on. It doesn’t take long for Dreamfall: Chapters to establish itself as a game trapped in the past. From its premise to its execution, Dreamfall: Chapters is a game out of place and out of time. Sadly, not only does Dreamfall: Chapters fail to make good on this promise, it stubbornly ignores a decade’s worth of progress in adventure-game design. Dreamfall: Chapters, the Kickstarted follow-up to Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, seems at first to take a similar approach, promising players that their choices will shape the game’s narrative in poignant, meaningful ways. ![]() In those 11 years, we’ve seen the adventure-game genre redefined by games like Telltale’s The Walking Dead and Dontnod’s Life is Strange, games that discarded pixel hunting and illogical ‘logic’ puzzles for a greater focus on narrative and consequence. It’s been 11 years since Dreamfall: The Longest Journey left Zoë Castillo trapped in a coma, placed there by her mother for the crime of saving the world. For good and for bad, Dreamfall: Chapters is a game trapped in the past. ![]() We made a dozen of these before he was satisfied. He showed me how to twist and braid a halter from the ropes. Ralph now uses Jack's name with the recognition that a taboo was evolving around that word too. He felt, like most journalists Mick had encountered, that he was obliged to have an opinion on everything under the sun. ![]() The cartoon itself is only loosely based on the video games of the same name. Because towards the end, you fight against Jimmy before you rescue Marian. This story seems to be loosely based on the story from the NES version of the first game. In the beginning, Jimmy was one of the bad guys, and was an enemy to Billy. But even though they’re said to be 18 years old, they look more like they’re in their 30s to me. And as such, the Lee brothers would fight each other 18 years later once they came of age and meet for the first time. Billy Lee was raised by an elderly martial artist simply known as the “Oldest Dragon” (gee, how original), and his brother Jimmy Lee was raised by the evil Shadow Master as his second-in-command. The premise of the show centered around the Lee brothers as they are separated at birth. Granted, a lot like the Megaman cartoon which came a year later, the Double Dragon cartoon is a bit of a mixed bag for me. But for as cheesy as it was, it did have some redeeming qualities that kept me interested for as long as the show lasted. So how does this show hold up? Well, to be perfectly honest, it doesn’t hold up that well. But as a kid in the 90s, I had high expectations from cartoons and movies based on video games despite that most of them sucked. And on top of that, the show was basically a marketing ploy to sell toys… Go figure. ![]() Now, as you can imagine, the cartoon was basically just yet another dumb cheesy 90s show with some terrible animation, corny jokes, lame humor, and a theme song that was downright cheesy as hell, but strangely addictive. And the less that is said about that crappy excuse for a game the better. And of course, it was this cartoon that led to the creation of the absolutely abysmal game “Double Dragon V: The Shadow Falls”. And I already reviewed that miserable trainwreck so there’s no reason for me to go over that again. But before it bit the dust the live action Double Dragon movie was made. The show first aired on television on September 12th, 1993, and ended on December 4th, 1994, lasting for 2 seasons and 26 episodes. And we all know what titles DIC is most famous for. And well, that’s pretty much what we got back in the day, courtesy of DIC Entertainment. And as such, a TV show had to be produced for it. The game became popular among gamers as one of the first beat em ups of the late 80s and early 90s. The animated TV series, simply known as “Double Dragon” was an American cartoon show based on the video game franchise by “Technos Japan Corporation”, who were also known for their Kunio Kun series. In fact, I’m just going to get straight to the point. But I’ve already went over that in earlier entries so I’m not going to flood this review elaborating on the franchise’s history again. I’ve went over the source material many times before, and I talked about it at great length. So what was the show about, might you ask? Well, if you’ve been a Double Dragon fan for as long as I have, then you should already be familiar with the franchise’s lore and history. You know, much like how the Ruby Spears Megaman cartoon was just called “Megaman” and not “Megaman: The Animated Series”. Or just “Double Dragon” as it was simply called. Well, now that that’s out of the way, let’s get into the subject for today Double Dragon the animated series. ![]() ![]() But before I do that, I want to personally thank FailSeeker for suggesting this subject to me. And this particular subject was suggested to me by none other than, so I figured, what better time than now to review yet another cartoon series based on a video game? Well, that’s what I’m about to do right now as I once again delve into the world of Double Dragon. I know I keep saying stuff like this in every one of my introductions, but I know that I’ve covered quite a number of titles before in the past. Hey, this is MDTartist83, and welcome to another retro TV review by yours truly. ![]() Trash Intake Decrease Predicted based on presence of New Object (Vacuum Cleaner Unit Model No. Core Directive of New Object (Vacuum Cleaner Unit Model No. Vacuum Cleaner Unit Max Intake Ability Per Second: 20 Trash Environment Size 100.0 by 100.0 square feet.
